No war is worth losing...
We've all had bad days. Times when work was overbearing, finances were tight, and things just never seemed to go our way. Yet, our 'hectic' lives seem pretty insignificant compared with the sheer terror experienced by one whose life is threatened by an incurable disease. Nor is it any easier on those loved ones who are forced to watch helplessly as their husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers decay right before their eyes.
All other forms of death — accidental or otherwise — seem to be less of a drain if only for their rapid and unexpected timing. Death by disease wears down one's soul in the process. R.J. Godlewski learned this lesson firsthand as he watched the drawn, agonizing horror of his beloved Sara slowly succumb to her fourth battle with cancer. It was an experience that one never wants to go through again and R.J. Godlewski immediately launched upon a crusade to defeat the disease that defeated his wife.
It seems an eternity since President Nixon declared a war on cancer some three decades or so ago and perhaps rightfully so. Despite tremendous advances in medicine, technology, and even finances, we appear no closer to locating a cure than we were before the "war" began. If money, technology, and sheer brain power aren't the problem, R.J. realized, then the problem must reside with where we search for cures.
